Combined cooling, heating and power

Wärtsilä combined heat and power (CHP) plants are designed to meet the customer's specific needs, be it steam generation, district heating, hot or chilled water, or a combination of the above. As flexibility within the power system will be increasingly required in order to integrate growing shares of renewables in a cost-efficient and secure manner Wärtsilä CHP technology, with it’s fast starting and stopping capabilities, can achieve total efficiencies as high as >90%.

Our CHP plants can run on a wide range of liquid, gaseous and bio fuels, all the while securing low emissions and high efficiency. The heat recovery systems used in our CHP plants are of the post engine “hang-on” type, and thus don't directly influence engine performance or operation. The engine will yield the same high electrical efficiency and output, regardless of the rate of heat production.

Depending on the installation specific heating and/or cooling requirements, plant location and the seasonal variations in ambient conditions, the plant can be equipped with standardized heat recovery and chiller solutions, with absorption chillers for heat recovery and electrically driven chillers for covering the peak demands. Wärtsilä lifecycle solutions and performance guarantees ensure optimised efficiency and performance of the plant.

    W?rtsil?’s state-of-the-art gas engine technology will provide flexibility and black start capability to DREWAG, the local utility company in Dresden, Germany. The combined heat and power (CHP) engine power plant will produce electricity and district heating simultaneously. Upon completion, it will be the only power plant that can restart the Dresden grid in case of a power blackout.

    In May 2007, W?rtsil? was awarded a contract from JB Enertek Co., Ltd., South Korea, to deliver engineering and equipment (EEQ) in two phases for a 25.3 MWe combined heat and power plant (CHP). The plant is located in Cheong Soo community in Cheon Ahn City, approximately 100 kilometres south of Seoul, Korea.

    The energy company Valkeakosken Energia, owned by the City of Valkeakoski in southern Finland, provides its citizens with electricity, district heating and natural gas. When the electricity market was deregulated, Valkeakosken Energia decided to be a proactive participant in the market by investing in its own combined heat and power production to ensure competitive electricity and district heating prices for their customers.

    The Gy?rh? combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which supplies power to the city of Gy?r in Hungary and heat to the city’s district heating system, is an example of fast-track supply in two phases. The total plant features three W?rtsil? 18V34SG gas engines, which produce an aggregate output of 17 MWth and 18 MWe.

    W?rtsil? Corporation was awarded a major power plant contract for an 84.8 MWe replacement and extension of an existing diesel power plant at Manisa in western Turkey. It involved the first W?rtsil? 50DF generating sets for a power plant installation, while W?rtsil? 34SG sets were added in the extension. The new plant allowed a change of fuel from heavy fuel oil to natural gas.
